Night/Day/Cycle

Nice and local, this year’s Night and Day/Cycle events will be perfect for both experienced and novice rogainers, set in the scenic Pierce’s Creek area. Expect a great mix of fire trails for the runners and cyclists, plus enough navigational challenge around the pines to keep things interesting.

The Hash House will be at Laurel Camp Spectator Point, a comfortable half-hour drive from Canberra on sealed roads.

You can choose from these options (or double up the night and one of the day options!):

Night 5-hour – Saturday 6 September, 5:00pm–10:00pm

Day Foot or Cycle 6-hour – Sunday 7 September, 9:00am–3:00pm

Our wonderful caterers, Hartley Lifecare, will be back serving up their much-loved soups and toasties. Please make an effort to share transport as it will help reduce parking at the Hash House.

Entries cost $45 full and $36 concession. Under 14 free. No solo entries for this event - teams of 2 to 5 people. Entries are open to 11:59pm Sunday 31 August without late fees. Entries received between then and complete close at 11:59pm on Wednesday 3 September incur a late fee of $10 per person.

Final Instructions

Thank you for entering the Pierces Creek 5hr Night Rogaine and/or 6hr Day/Cycle Rogaine. Team leaders, make sure that everyone on your team reads these instructions carefully.

Important

COVID, flu or other illness

If you are not feeling well, please stay home. It’s better for you and all of us.

Indemnity Form

Please bring to the event a printed and completed indemnity form located here. Check the team list for your relevant event on the event page to ensure that all details for your team including category are correct. If incorrect, please contact the Event Coordinator prior to the event.

  • Ensure that all team members sign a separate indemnity form. Parents or guardians must sign for people under 18. Also provide registration number(s) of your car(s) at the Hash House. Be sure to put your team number on the form.
  • Present your completed indemnity form at the registration desk.
  • Medical advice: All competitors should consider advising their partner or team of any pre-existing medical conditions (such as diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, susceptibility to anaphylaxis) that may require first-aid action on course. This should include a description of the symptoms, the required first-aid action, and the location in their bag of any medication (such as sugar, ventolin, epi-pen, anti-histamines).

How to Get There

The Hash House will be at Laurel Camp Spectator Point  (located here), which is approximately 30 minutes from the centre of Canberra. Please carpool.

Take the Cotter Road west from Canberra, entering from Tuggeranong Parkway if you are from the north or south of Canberra.

You will then pass Cotter Campground and Cotter Bend before entering Paddys River Road. Drive 2.7 kilometres on Paddys River Road before you will see a turn to the right hand side at Laurel Camp Road (a good unsealed road, driveable by 2WDs).

Driving approximately 850m on Laurel Camp Road will bring you to a carpark where the Hash House will be.  Follow signs and volunteer directions for parking.

To register, one person per team attends registration and collect maps. That person will need to:

  • Bring a first aid kit, so that it can be checked; see below for what it must contain
  • Bring one completed indemnity form per team member.

Electronic scoring: As this event is using the Navlight system of scoring, each team will be issued with wristband and tags upon registration.

You will also be given pre-marked maps, control descriptions, course setter's notes and a small copy of the map to be used as a flight plan (draw your intended route). We recommend that you arrive at least an hour prior to the start of the event to allow enough time for final preparations and route planning. Each team must mark their intended route on the flight plan and hand it in before starting.

Map and Course Details

There will be one A3 map, at 1:25,000 scale with 10 m contour intervals. Magnetic north lines are marked on the map. Out of bounds areas are marked in pink shading. Control Descriptions are printed on the front, and the course setters’ notes are printed on the back. The map is printed on Teslin paper which is very tough and generally does not need to be covered in contact.

The vegetation on course is predominantly pine plantation and regenerating forest. Blackberries are prevalent in many established water courses. While the course was set to avoid thicken blackberries, gaitors and long-pants are recommended.

Water

Please bring enough water for Hash House use and for at least 3 hours on course. There is one water drop on the course, marked on the map. We do not recommend drinking any other water found on the course.

Catering

Hartley Lifecare is providing catering for this event. Please bring your own plate, bowl, cup and cutlery.

Please Bring to the Event

  • Completed indemnity form
  • Map will be printed on Teslin waterproof paper with control descriptions. Contact or map case optional.
  • Coloured pens, pencils, scissors, highlighter pen, table and chairs or board for map preparation.
  • Some food for before and/or during the event.
  • Your own plate, bowl, cup and cutlery so you can partake in the catering.
  • Water for your use at the Hash House and to start the event with.

  • Space blanket (per person)

Other items we recommend that you carry/wear

  • Sunscreen, sun-hat, sunglasses
  • Adequate warm clothes for the conditions (noting conditions can change quickly)
  • raincoat, warm jacket

  • gloves

Mobile Phone Coverage

Mobile phone coverage is alright around HH across all networks but patchy around most of the course, with better signal found at higher elevations. If you have an emergency or need to contact the event coordinator on the day of the event, consider sending an SMS.

The Hash House number will be 0413 176 282 and is printed on the map.

Land Use

The Lower Cotter Catchment Reserve is a drinking water catchment, where human activity is restricted to prevent contamination of streams with human waste. All attempts must be made to meet the following standards when passing human waste:

a. Be a minimum of 60 m from any water source.

b. Bury waste to a minimum depth of 15cm.

c. Be a minimum of 20m from tracks, management trails and areas of recreation

All equipment including bicycles, shoes, backpacks, and any sleeping gear, must be thoroughly cleaned prior to the event, and again upon finishing the event. This is to ensure that weed seed and pathogens are not spread by participants.

Summary of Event Rules and Scoring

  • The only navigational aids permitted are the maps we provide together with your compasses.
  • Teams consist of 1 to 5 competitors and must remain within earshot of each other at all times. All members must simultaneously get to within 5m of each control point.
  • All team members must punch their Navlight tags at each control to score points.
  • If a Navlight punch has failed, record the three letter code visible inside the clear end of the punch.
  • Competitors must not enter out-of-bounds areas; gates must be left as found; stock must not be disturbed.
  • The organisers may disqualify a team if it acts against these rules or against the spirit of the event.
  • A team can retire a member at the hash house. This will finish that team's event. A new team can form but it must start with zero score.
  • Late Penalty: 10 points per minute (or part) late. Disqualification if more than 30 minutes late.
  • If teams score equal points then the first team home will have a higher rank.

Full rules of rogaining are on the Australian Rogaining Website.

Presentation and Awards

Mugs will be awarded to the winners of each category and certificates to the place-getters of most categories. Presentations will take place around 30 minutes after the end of the event.
